Another court hearing is scheduled this week in San Francisco regarding the movie industry arguments against RealDVD software package. San Francisco court could come up with a conclusion this week or soon thereafter if RealNetwork’s $30 software package violates copyrights and should therefore be permanently stop from distribution.
They have already been ordered to stop since last October when the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) won a temporary restraining order, forcing RealDVD off the market.
To RealDVD spokesperson Bill Hankes, the case is simple.
"The consumer should have the same fair use rights to copy DVDs just as they have for the last decade with music."

One of the most important aspects of the law is that it changes. New laws are constantly being written. And this is particularly true with copyright law and how that relates to digital recording.
The digital age did not exist a few years ago. Then, very slowly, it started. And that meant the law was behind when DVD burning became all the rage. The law takes a while to catch up with what is happening in the world.

There are three groups in the world today.
- People who watch movies
- People who make movies and
- People who make equipment to allow you to watch movies
There will always be movie makers and movie watchers. What has changed in recent times and what is still changing today is the equipment used to enable people to watch movies.
Video tapes still exist but we know that discs as in CDs and DVDs have long replaced audio and video tapes. But there’s been a recent development in the field of video discs in the form of BDs or Blu-ray discs.
These discs are in competition with DVDs and more recently with HD DVDs. It’s a worldwide battle with vast fortunes to be made or lost.
