Dual Layer DVD Burning E-mail
Dual layer DVD technology or DVD9 is not new.  In fact, it has been stirring out foremost motion pictures on marked dual layer DVD Discs for years.  Since dual layer technology has always been part of the DVD qualifications, dual layer recording on the desktop is the natural progression of single layer 4.7GB recordable technology.

Dual layer proficient recorders will have the capability to record on the new dual layer DVD recordable discs, and same with conventional single layer DVD discs and CDs also.  Dual layer DVD recordable discs provide four hours of high MPEG2 video, or up to 8.5GB data on a single-sided disc with two individual recordable “layers”.

How Are Dual Layer Discs Recorded?

Composed by one polycarbonate platter replica base and a single organic recording layer, a single-sided dual layer recordable disc includes two organic dye recording layers.  It is sandwiched between dual polycarbonate bases and semi-reflective metal layers divided by a visible spacing layer.  The polycarbonate base manages the revolution velocity of the disc and supplies the addressing scheme for the disc.  It is on the primary recordable layer where the entire “table of contents” and system region of a dual layer recordable disc are stored.

The optics will concentrate on the laser at one of the dual layers to attempt and sense an “Address In Pre-groove” (ADIP) signal once a dual layer recordable disc is inserted.  Using the ADIP indication, it can be distinguished whether the disc is dual layer and which layer it is fixated on.  The laser will shift its scope of focus to access any one of the two recordable layers once the media types and the layer are distinguished. Then the drive will focus on the Lead-In area of the disc to decide whether the disc is partly recorded in Multi-session format, entirely blank, or Finalized.

The two layers characterize one bordering address stream for recording as a DVD-ROM, Video Disc, or a packet recorded disc.  Just like a standard DVD recordable disc, the drive primarily records on the first layer from within the hub area outward.  When the last part of the data is recorded in the first level, the Middle Zone 0 is added.  The drive then focuses on the second recordable layer to generate Middle Zone 1 which over-wraps Middle Zone 0. It is recorded from the outside rim inwards.  It is probable to add data in “sessions” on a disc since multi-session discs are capable of recording with dual layer media.

The Recordable DVD Format Debate and Dual Layer

Primary of the first two organizations to establish a Dual Layer recordable standard, is the DVD+RW Alliance.  Formally termed as Double Layer format, it is originally available exclusively in a write once format named as DVD+R DL.  Primarily its recording speed is 2.4X, moreover it is anticipated to improve in the future.  DVD+R DL drives will also be capable of recording single layers approximately at 8X or even faster.  These will also sustain high-speed CD-R\RW burning as well.

Applications For Double Layer Recordable Technology

Bringing home movies to the next level with dual layer DVD burning, consumers can now enjoy a maximum of  four hours of excellent quality MPEG-2 video on a single-sided disc. An advantage of having extra space is the capability to intensify the video bit rate when authoring to get a superior quality on the completed disc.  A conventional DVD authoring software programs utilizes flexible bit rate for optimum DVD disc space utilization.  More space will be utilized on the disc by demanding the program to encode at the standardized maximum bit rate.  Still, the visible quality distinction is worth it.

With Dual Layer DVD recording, it is probable to produce longer home movies and combine home movies onto a single disc.  You can also save essential applications, data, and settings for back up purposes.  In a single dual layer DVD disc you can press a maximum of twelve CDs or a floppy disk with 5,902 value of information.

You can save more or less 2,000 MP3s in a dual layer DVD recordable disc, or 17,000 excellent quality of JPEG images.
