What is Blu-Ray? |

Blu-Ray is the latest technology in relation to being able to copy, record, and rewrite high definition video. It is also a great way to store large amounts of data with the capacity to hold five times more data than most DVD’s. Blu-Ray also results in better quality pictures and sounds because of the advanced codes it contains. The name Blu-Ray comes from the fact that this technology relies on a blue laser instead of a red one as other types of media do including DVD’s. Consumers like the quality of it but also the fact that it is backwards compatible with both DVD’s and CD’s they already own. The use of the blue laser results in a shorter wavelength needed so more material can be stored.
If you haven’t heard much about Blu-Ray yet, you will very soon as it is becoming more popular. More than 180 electronic devices now feature it including the very popular Playstation III. Major manufacturers of video games and movies are turning to the technology of Blu-Ray as well as the music industry. Blu-Ray was developed by the combined efforts of major players in the electronics world including Apple, Dell, Sony, Walt Disney, and Warner Brothers so all of the industries had a role in the outcome of the final product.
One feature of Blu-Ray that consumers love is that the way it is designed many of the issues that can result in damaged DVD’s and CD’s won’t happen. Blu-Ray offers a protective layer to prevent spills from causing damage and from scratches occurring. The discs can be single or double layered. The single disc can hold 25GB of data with the double holding up to 50 GB. The future plans plan to double that amount for both the single and double layer discs. Right now a standard Blu-Ray disc can hold 23 hours of data and a high definition disc can hold up to 9 hours.
Consumers will be able to legally copy the material on the Blu-Ray discs as long as they are to be used as backups for their own personal convenience. Those manufactures who are not offering this option with their materials have to clearing mark the packaging to let consumers know before they make the purchase. You can play Blu-Ray discs on a computer without an internet connection. You can also play them on a portable DVD player, a Blu-Ray player, and the Playstation III console.
You can find Blu-Ray players and discs in many electronic stores and it is just a matter of time before they start appearing in all retail stores across the world. The cost of these electronic devices are still fairly high right now but in time they will become more affordable. The goal of the industry is to get the cost down to compete with DVD’s so that consumers will be more willing to accept the advance technology.
It is believed that Blu-Ray players and discs will eventually replace DVD’s just as they replaced VHS tapes of the past. Since the Blu-Ray players are compatible with DVD’s you won’t have to replace those in your home collection should you choose to move forward with the latest media technology. One of the main reasons that consumers are willing to accept the new Blu-Ray is that the sharpness of the pictures and the vivid colors that come through on the screen are better than the quality of any DVD they own. Once you see how well it works it is hard to accept anything less! Since there is more storage capacity on the disc you can also expect to receive more great features in addition to the program you purchased.
