What exactly is a DVD? E-mail
DVD is a high-density optical disc format which was created for great content. DVD was once known as digital videodisc or digital versatile disc but the DVD is now commonplace parlance. For the novice, a DVD disc may easily be mistaken for a CD but aside from the fact that both CD and DVD are of 120mm in diameter and 1.2mm in thickness, a DVD can actually contain 4.7GB worth of data while a CD can only take up to 650MB. Take a double-sided/double-layer of DVD discs and you can actually keep up to 17GB of data content. And of course, because the DVD is already a part of the new wave of digital technology, degeneration of data will not be something to worry about.

Where did the DVD come from? What improvements are in the DVD?
There are 3 main technological improvements which increased the amount of data that can be kept on a DVD, namely: dual-layer recording, enhanced laser, and disc improvements.

The shorter wavelength beam which is found in the enhanced laser technology in a DVD drive actually lets more data be put together even tighter on a disc, in result improving the overall capacity of the disc. From 0.8 micrometers on a CD-ROM, the pit length becomes 0.4 micrometers on DVD.
The fact that the DVD disc may use two 0.6mm discs which are bonded, not only permits double-sided recording but it comes out even more sturdy than your typical CD. This means that there is less probability of it warping in the future because of temperature changes or the like.

There are 4 kinds of DVD discs:

DVD-18:  17GB on a dual-sided dual-layered disc.
DVD-10:  9.4GB dual-sided single-layered disc
DVD-9: 8.5GB single-sided double-layered disc
DVD-5: 4.7GB single-sided single-layered disc

When the term DVD burning is mentioned, what exactly are people referring to? What does it mean?

DVD burning can mean a number of different tasks. It can refer to duplicating or copying discs, authoring fresh material on a DVD, or ripping material already on a DVD in order to manipulate it for another use. DVD is a great improvement from your ordinary videotape and it is mostly better than normal laserdiscs. This lies in the fact that not only are DVD copies clear but they can endure the test of time as well.

The right burning software can allow you to make great backup copies of your existing DVD movies at home. Everything will be included in these copies, the features, subtitles, different languages, and menus. You can also expect the same video and audio quality as the original DVD.
General DVD burning software may enable you of copying in PAL and NTSC formats, some authoring guides may even help you in burning DVDs which are copy protected.
