An more recent article on burning copyright DVDs can be found here

First, you need to work out which files should you be burning? Usually the files on a copyrighted DVD are huge (especially if you are trying to back up a movie or computer game).. Sometimes they might take up as much as 9 GB of your Hard Disk space. If you are burning from a copyrighted DVD then just ripping the main .VOB files would take up most of this space.

Some conversion tools will require you to rip all the files from the copyrighted DVD to function properly. But if you are only interested in the copyrighted movie then technically the .VOBs and the associated .IFO information files is all that you will need. The type of rip you perform is totally dependent on the DVD Burning software you will use for burning from a copyrighted DVD.

The process of burning from a copyrighted DVD is heavily memory dependent. Therefore, the faster your computer is; the faster will be the process of burning. A faster DVD Drive can also minimize the amount of time taken for ripping the copyrighted DVD discs. Depending on the speed of your computer ripping a copyrighted DVD may take as much as 1 hour of your time. Of course the time and amount of space required on the hard disk will vary based on your hardware and whether you rip the Full DVD or just the main movie .VOB / .IFO files.
