In this article you will see how to make copies of DVD that are not Copyright protected using Finder in Panther and Jaguar in Mac. It is common for most of us to have only one DVD drive in our Mac, therefore this will a two step process. The process of DVD Burning could be to insert the original copy of DVD in the disc drive and copy the contents of the DVD into our hard drive.
After we have copied the contents of the DVD we will make a disc image of it on our hard drive. A disc image is the exact and the perfect clone of the original. Lastly we will insert a blank DVD and burn the disc image to the lank DVD.
How to make copies of DVD with your Mac
1) Place the original DVD that you want to copy in the Mac disc drive. 2) This will launch the Apple DVD Player. Close the DVD Player and find the DVD icon on your Desktop. 3) Use the Disk Utility that can be found in the Utilities folder inside the Application Folder. Select the DVD from the panel list on the left. Click the New Image icon on the Disk Utility window. 4) Next, a new Save As dialog box will appear, just enter the new name for the DVD and select the destination to save the file. Make sure there is enough room in the destination drive. Select the DVD / CD master in the Image Format drop down. Make sure the Encryption is set to none. Click the Save button. 5) You will now see a Progress Bar and after the copying process is completed you will see a new item in the Disk Utility window. 6) This is the DVD copy. You can now eject the original DVD from the disc drive. 7) Now select this new new DVD image item from the Disk Utility Window and click on the Burn button. The burn window will drop down. You can select burners, (if you have more than one DVD burner), burn speed and 'Verify burn'. After inserting a blank DVD, click the Burn button bottom right of the Burn window. Another way to do it... 1) Place the DVD that you want to copy into the Mac. 2) This will launch the Apple DVD Player. Close the DVD Player and find the DVD icon on your Desktop. 3) Open 'Disk Copy', found in the Utilities folder inside the Applications folder. Drag the DVD icon on your desktop into the Disk Copy window. 4) The 'Image Volume' dialog box will open, enter the name of your new DVD and select a destination. I have chosen my desktop (the desktop is always on your boot drive), but remember that DVDs can run over 4 gigs, so be sure that the disk you are Saving the DVD to has enough space. In the 'Image Format' drop-down menu, select DVD/CD master. Leave 'Encryption' set to none. Click Save. 5) You may be asked to enter your Password. 6) You will be presented with a Progress window. When completed the Disk Copy dialog box will now have the message, "Image Volume operation completed successfully" and the the Disk Image will be mounted on your desktop. (The Disk Copy window below has its tool bar turned on). 7)At this point you will want to eject your original DVD. Click on the Burn Button in the Disk Copy tool bar or from the File Menu > Burn Image. You will then be asked to navigate to your new Disk Image and select it. 8) After selecting your DVD Disk Image, click on the Burn button. At this point you will be given the option of selecting which drive you want to do the burning, (if you have more than one DVD burner). You will also select your burn speed from the 'Speed' drop-down menu and if you want to have the DVD disk 'Verified' after the burn. When you click on the Burn button the burner door will open and you'll be asked to insert a blank.
