1) What is a DVD?
DVD means Digital Versatile Disc and is an advanced type of CD-ROM that holds a minimum of 4.7 gigabytes to a maximum of 17 gigabytes of information. They are compressed using the MPEG codec, which stores only the changes from one frame to another instead of the entire frame.

2) What are the different types of DVD Formats?

DVD-R and DVD-RW
DVD-R was the first DVD recording format released that was compatible with standalone DVD Players.
DVD-R is a non-rewriteable format and it is compatible with about 93% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.
DVD-RW is a rewriteable format and it is compatible with about 80% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.
DVD-R and DVD-RW supports single side 4.37 computer GB DVDs(called DVD-5) and double sided 8.75 computer GB DVDs(called DVD-10).

DVD+R and DVD+RW
DVD+R is a non-rewritable format and it is compatible with about 89% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.
DVD+RW is a rewritable format and is compatible with about 79% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.

DVD+R DL
DVD+R DL or called DVD+R9 is a Dual Layer writeable DVD+R. The dual layered discs can hold 7.95 computer GB (called DVD-9) and dual layered double sides 15.9 computer GB (called dvd-18).

DVD-RAM
DVD-RAM has the best recording features but it is not compatible with most DVD-ROM drives and DVD-Video players. Think more of it as a removable hard disk. DVD-RAM is usually used in some DVD Recorders.

3) What is the capacity of a DVD disc?

DVD-R/W: 4,707,000,000 Bytes, i.e. 4,489 MB or 4,38 GB
DVD+R/W: 4,700,000,000 Bytes, i.e. 4483 MB.
DVD+R9 (more than 10x as expensive as DVD±R!): 8,547,000,000 Bytes

4) My DVD Movie is a little bit larger than the capacity of the disc. Can I overburn?
No, Overburning is not supported by DVD Disks.

5) At what speeds does a DVD Burning software burn?
1x speed: 59 min
2x speed: 30 min
2,4x on 4,7 GB media: 25 min
2,4x on 8,5 GB media: 45 min
4x speed: 15 min
8x speed: 8-9 min, depending on writer
12x speed: 6-7min, depending on writer

6) Can I write to DVDs at a higher speed than what they are certified for?
Sometimes you can burn DVDs at a higher speed, but you have to check the quality of the copied DVDs. Burning at a higher speed may not give you the best desired results.

7) So does a lower write speed mean better quality?
Might be, might not be, good media should work at higher qualities at higher speed. Quality is dependent on the DVD writer as well as the DVD Media.

8) Which DVD media should I use to burn my DVDs?
It is always a good idea to check the media supported by the manufacturers. Use of Branded media is always recommended.

The most common files in a DVD movie disc are -
1) .VOB Files - These are the default movie files and contain the actual video and audio in a compressed format.
2) .IFO Files - These are the information files that contain information used by the DVD player about where and where to run the .VOB files.
3) .BUP Files - These are the backup .IFO files and are only used in case the original .IFO files get corrupted.
