All DVD Disks are encrypted with an encryption called the Content Scrambling Systems (CSS) . The sole purpose of this encryption is to protect the DVDs from being illegally copied into multiple copies.

The encryption also protects copyrights by preventing the pirating of DVDs. Any DVD player that can play DVDs decrypts the data on the fly as it is reading the disk. Therefore manufacturers who want to develop a compatible DVD Player has to purchase an expensive license worth thousands of dollars to this encryption algorithm from the DVD Copy Control Authority. Every applicant is given their own key with which to unscramble the DVD so it can be played within their player. In case of one of this key getting into the wrong hands, the future DVD disks could be made so that key wouldn't work on them anymore. These keys are basically a string of characters that are used to authenticate the validity of the disc that the DVD Player is attempting to read.

What are DVD Burning Decryptors?

When DVD players were introduced in computers there was no company willing to invest money to get a license to write a DVD Player for Linux. So a group of Linux programmers wrote their own CSS descrambling program and posted their source code on the Internet as an open source code. This CSS decryption also referred to as DeCSS (De-Content Scrambling System) is used to decrypt a DVD, allowing it to be unlocked and then copied. Any DVD copying software that has CSS decryption inbuilt is called DVD Burning Decryptors. Many DVD Burning software also use third party DVD Burning Decryptors to avoid legal hassles. Such DVD Burning Decryptors are capable of making backup copies of your favorite DVDs.

The basic process of DVD Burning Decryptors is summarized below:

Mutual Authentication: The disc and drive negotiates the session key and establishes the 'trustworthiness' of both the disc and the DVD Burning Decryptors. This helps prevent the use of a hacked player or a copied disc.

Decoding disk: The DVD Burning Decryptors cycles through a series of trusted player codes until it can decode the disc.

Negotiate the disc and title keys: The title and bus keys are used by the player to work with the session key to decode the data.

Data Transmission: The DVD player reads a sector and sends it on for processing.

Disc Decoding: The host computer receives the data and uses the disk key to decode it.

Sector Decoding: The title key is used to access the data passing it on to be decoded using the sector key.

There are many DVD Burning Decryptors available in the market today. Some of the best DVD Burning Decryptors are listed on this page.
