An introduction to DVD Authoring E-mail
With today's ever advancing technology, you don't have to be a movie mogul to try your hand at video authoring and DVD replication. Whether you're merely a hobbyist or an amateur itching to unleash the indie filmmaker in you, you can now produce your own professional-looking DVDs with relative ease. With just a little creativity, time and a realistic budget, movie making can be a snap.

Video authoring involves importing your video and audio clips to a computer for the purpose of encoding to a DVD. Thus, the first step in video authoring starts where shooting and editing end. This means that by the time you're ready to author your video, you should already be done with the various stages of movie planning and execution. Conception, scriptwriting, casting all the way down to shooting and editing should all be out of the way. Assuming all those steps have been performed to your satisfaction, all you need to do is to translate your footages into MPEG format using your preferred software.

There are a wide variety of video authoring programs in the market today. If you're on a tight budget, you can select one of the countless rudimentary yet functional freeware or shareware available online. If money is not an issue for you, then opting for pricey yet more sophisticated software will definitely generate more professional-looking output.

Along with your encoded movie, you may wish to include additional features, such as subtitles or different language audio tracks. After those are in place, you can now concentrate on creating your various menus.

You can use the menu templates that typically come with your standard video authoring software package. If you want sleeker backgrounds, however, you can design your own images using graphic editing software such as Photoshop or Paintshop Pro. Again, you are only limited by your skills and creativity.

Navigation buttons and their corresponding targets then need to be assigned to your root menu and submenus. To avoid dead links, make sure your buttons point towards the right clip, chapter, menu, or command. For easier navigation through your submenus, remember to always include a button pointing back to the root.

Once you're satisfied with your layout, you can now create a master copy of your movie. For tight budgets or small-scale production requirements, all you need do is burn your master onto a blank disc. You can then duplicate as many copies as you wish, either by burning them yourself or by outsourcing the job to a third-party service provider. This procedure is quick and ideal for producing up to 500 copies.

For more ambitious projects, you can take your files directly to a reputable DVD replication service provider . There they will create an imprint of your files onto a glass master. The glass master will be used as a template to create sturdier metal molds called stampers. The stampers, in turn, will be used to press your DVDs for you. Because the process of creating a glass master can be time consuming, the first pressing of your DVD may take several weeks to replicate. Once a master and the stampers have been created, reordering your DVDs should be a simple and hassle-free affair.

Whichever method you choose, the end result will be a DVD version of your film, ready for labeling, packaging, distribution and, hopefully, enjoyment.
